Brian Smith appears to have mastered portrait painting several times over, even throwing drawings, lino-cuts and self-portraits into the mix. While I have it on good authority that brand new work will be showing up on his site in a week or so, I just couldn’t hold off on sharing his incredible work that long.

Brian Smith
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009Jeremy Enecio
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009The dozen or so works available for viewing on Jeremy Enecio’s site illustrate the depth of his skill with painting and digital mediums, as well as the diversity of his inspirations, ranging from pop culture to Russian folklore. I can’t wait to see what comes next!
Ryan McGinness
Monday, September 14th, 2009The complex patterning and heavily layered imagery of Ryan McGinness’ work is eye-catching and impressive, and becomes even more so when he takes his paintings into the third dimension. Very cool.
Michael Naples
Friday, September 11th, 2009There are many fantastic paintings to be seen over on Michael Naples daily painting blog, though I suspect his posting schedule might slow down a bit over the coming weeks as he just became a father again last week. Congratulations!
Deth P. Sun
Thursday, September 10th, 2009Hollywood seems mildly obsessed at the moment with mining other mediums for movie ideas, but to my knowledge they haven’t been digging around the fine art world yet looking for new stories to tell. The incredibly strong narrative thread running through Deth P. Sun’s work seems like a pretty good case to do just that.
Don’t forget to check out his Flickr page to witness the full prolific output.
Michele Ramirez
Wednesday, September 9th, 2009Michele Ramirez distills her landscapes down to geometric colour fields without losing the sense of place and time, and I’m enjoying the results immensely.
Julia Prime
Tuesday, September 8th, 2009It might be a slight stretch to call Julia Prime’s work “painting”, it would be more accurate to say she is bringing the worlds of printmaking, painting and textile arts together. It isn’t a stretch at all to say that the results are fantastically organic and appealing.
Jeff Hein
Monday, September 7th, 2009Jeff Hein’s work embodies the perfect combination; astonishing technical ability and entertaining, thoughtful, compelling subject matter. He is also among a growing group of artists who provide a look behind the work with his blog, which is a trend I hope to see continue.
Monica Tap
Friday, September 4th, 2009I spend a fair share of my time working with video images on a computer screen in my other life as an editor, and every once in a while I come across a single frame of video footage that is compelling all on its own, and on really rare occasions, I find a frame so compelling I use it as reference for a painting. I suppose it was the recognition of those rare moments that first grabbed me when I came across Monica Tap’s series of paintings entitled “one-second hudson”. Her work in this series is inspired by quicktime videos of landscapes filmed from moving vehicles, and I love the sense of frozen time and energy in these images.
Tony Curanaj
Thursday, September 3rd, 2009Tony Curanaj is always good, but for my money he’s at his best when he’s taking a macro view of the world. His highly realistic style is a beautiful thing to witness when he uses it to examine a tiny corner of the world (or tiny patch of the wall, as the case may be.)
